Consistency in Character

From the Desk of Pastor Owens

FAITHFUL IN EVERY SEASON

Scripture: Genesis 39:2 — “The LORD was with Joseph.”

Life changes. We move through seasons of success and disappointment, recognition and rejection, waiting and advancement. Joseph knew this firsthand. He went from being his father’s favored son to being betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, imprisoned, forgotten, and eventually placed in a position of great responsibility in Egypt.

Joseph’s circumstances changed, but his character remained anchored in God.

That is the challenge of consistency: Who are you when your circumstances change?

Joseph could have allowed betrayal to make him bitter, temptation to make him compromise, or imprisonment to make him give up. Instead, he continued to honor God. When no one was watching, he chose integrity. When doing right cost him, he remained faithful. When he was forgotten, he continued to serve.

Joseph’s story challenges us to look beyond what happens to us and examine what is happening within us.

Your circumstances may change without requiring your character to change.

For the Christian, consistency means becoming more like Christ regardless of the season. Jesus remained faithful when He was welcomed, rejected, misunderstood, and ultimately crucified. Our faith is not proven only when life is easy; it is revealed by how we respond when life is difficult.

For someone who is searching for God, Joseph’s story offers a different picture of faith. Faith does not promise a life without hardship. Instead, it points us toward a God whose presence can remain with us even when our circumstances do not change. Joseph could not control his situation, but he could choose how he responded to it.

CONSIDER

  • When my circumstances change, does my character change with them?

  • Would I make the same choices if no one else would ever know?

  • Am I willing to remain faithful when doing what is right costs me something?

  • What season of my life requires me to trust God and keep walking?

THIS WEEK

Choose one area where you need greater consistency—your words, choices, relationships, prayer, integrity, or response to difficulty. Each day, ask God to help you respond in a way that reflects His character.

Remember:

The pit did not define Joseph.
The prison did not defeat Joseph.
The palace did not change Joseph.

His circumstances changed, but his commitment to God remained.

PRAYER

God, help me remain faithful when my circumstances change. Give me the courage to choose what is right when no one is watching, the strength to remain faithful when obedience is difficult, and the patience to trust You while I wait. Shape my character so that, in every season, my life reflects You. Amen.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

Don’t allow a changing season to create a changing character.
