Coming Home to the Father
Scripture: “And he arose and came to his father.” — Luke 15:20 (ESV)
Sometimes people don't stop believing in God; they simply stop walking with Him. The distance can happen gradually. Prayer becomes less important. God's Word becomes easier to ignore. What once mattered begins to matter less.
Jesus tells the story of a young man who leaves his father's house because he wants life on his own terms. He takes his inheritance, leaves home, and eventually loses everything. What looked like freedom leaves him empty and desperate.
Then Scripture says, “And when he came to himself” (Luke 15:17).
The son finally recognized where his choices had led him. He could have stayed where he was, but instead he chose to return to his father. That is the heart of repentance—not merely feeling sorry but turning around and going home.
What makes the story so powerful is what happens next. While the son is still a long way off, his father sees him, has compassion, and runs to meet him (Luke 15:20). The son expects to return as a servant, but the father receives him as a son.
This challenges a common view of faith. Christianity is not simply about becoming a better person or performing religious duties. It is an invitation to come home to God through Jesus Christ. Our failures do not make repentance unnecessary; they make our need for grace clear.
For those who are unsure about faith, consider this question: What if God is not waiting to condemn you, but inviting you to come home?
For the Christian, the story asks a different question: Am I still walking closely with the Father? Following Christ means continually turning toward Him, surrendering our own way, and allowing His character to shape ours.
REFLECT
Have I been walking toward God or away from Him?
Is there an area of my life where I need to turn around?
Have I allowed independence, disappointment, or failure to create distance between God and me?
Am I becoming more like Christ in the way I live, love, forgive, and serve?
THIS WEEK
Identify one area where you have been drifting from God. Don't just feel guilty about it. Turn around. Pray, return to God's Word, obey what He has shown you, and take one step toward Him.
PRAYER
Father, show me where I have wandered from You. Give me the humility to recognize it, the courage to turn around, and the faith to come home. Help me receive Your grace and become more like Christ in the way I live. Amen.
REMEMBER
You can walk away from the Father's house, but the Father still leaves the door open for your return.
