Abiding in Self-Control

From the Desk of Pastor Owens

Scriptures: Galatians 5:23 (ESV)

"…self-control; against such things there is no law."

1 Corinthians 9:25 (ESV)

"Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable."

Reflection

Our culture often tells us to follow our hearts, satisfy our desires, and do whatever feels right. The Bible offers a different perspective, teaching that true freedom is not found in giving in to every impulse but in learning to live under God's loving direction.

Self-control is not about having more willpower. It is about allowing the Holy Spirit to shape our thoughts, words, actions, and desires. As we grow closer to Christ, we begin to make choices that honor God rather than merely satisfy ourselves.

Jesus modeled perfect self-control. He resisted temptation, responded with wisdom rather than anger, and remained faithful to the Father's will—even when doing so required sacrifice. His life shows us that self-control is not restrictive; it is the pathway to a life of purpose, peace, and spiritual maturity.

Whether you have followed Christ for years or are simply exploring the Christian faith, consider the following question:

Who or what is controlling your life?

Every decision we make shapes the person we are becoming. Christ invites us to surrender our lives to Him—not to take away our freedom, but to lead us into the life we were created for.

Reflect

What desires or habits compete most for control of my life?

Am I relying on my own strength or depending on God's Spirit?

What is one area where I can honor Christ by exercising greater self-control this week?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. Teach me to surrender my desires, words, and choices to You. Help me choose what honors You, even when it is difficult. Shape my life so others see Christ's character in me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

This Week's Challenge: Before making an important decision or responding to a difficult situation, pause and ask, "Will this choice help me become more like Christ?"
