Abiding in Goodness
From the Desk of Pastor Owens
Scripture: Matthew 5:16
"In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
Reflection
This week, we learned that goodness is more than being nice or doing the occasional good deed. It is a fruit of the Spirit—a reflection of God's character being formed within us.
One of the key truths from Sunday's message was the distinction between character and reputation.
Reputation is what people think we are.
Character is who we truly are.
People may see only our actions, but God sees our hearts. He knows our motives, our thoughts, and the choices we make when no one else is watching.
That is why biblical goodness begins on the inside before it is seen on the outside.
Jesus taught that our lives should shine before others, not to receive praise, but so that God receives glory. When goodness flows from a heart transformed by Christ, it becomes a powerful witness to the world.
Goodness is revealed when we:
Choose honesty over convenience.
Choose integrity over compromise.
Choose what is right, even when it is difficult.
Choose to honor God when no one else is watching.
As we abide in Christ, His goodness shapes our character and influences those around us.
Key Thought
Goodness is not about looking good—it is about becoming more like Christ.
Questions for Reflection
Is there a difference between my public reputation and my private character?
What decisions am I making when no one is watching?
How can I more fully reflect God's goodness in my home, workplace, or community?
Which area of my life needs to be more aligned with Christ's character?
Application
This week, focus on one area for growth in integrity.
Perhaps it is:
Being honest in a difficult situation.
Following through on a commitment.
Treating others fairly when no one is watching.
Making a decision that honors God rather than simply benefiting yourself.
Remember, goodness is often shown in small choices long before it is evident in big moments.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your goodness. Thank You for loving me, guiding me, and showing me what true goodness looks like in Jesus Christ. Help me develop a character that reflects Your heart. Give me the strength to choose what is right, even when it is difficult and when no one is watching. Let Your goodness shape my thoughts, words, and actions so that my life brings glory to You.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Closing Encouragement
The world may focus on reputation, but God cares about character.
As you abide in Christ this week, let His goodness transform you from the inside out.
When God's goodness fills your heart, it naturally shines through your life.
