Abiding in the Spirit: Abiding in Patience

From the Desk of Pastor Owens

Scripture: James 5: 7-8 (ESV)

"Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it... You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand."

Reflection

Patience is one of the most difficult fruits of the Spirit to cultivate because it requires us to trust God when we would rather have immediate answers.

We live in a world of instant communication, same-day delivery, and quick solutions. When things take longer than expected, frustration often follows. Yet God often works through process rather than speed.

James compares patience to a farmer waiting for the harvest. A farmer knows that growth takes time. The seed must be planted, nourished, and protected before the harvest arrives. No amount of worry or impatience can make the crop mature sooner.

The same holds true in our spiritual lives.

Sometimes we want God to answer immediately, change circumstances overnight, or bring growth without delay. Yet God often uses seasons of waiting to deepen our faith, strengthen our character, and teach us to depend on Him.

What feels like a delay to us may actually be a season of development in God's hands.

Patience is not passive. It is active trust. It is choosing to believe that God is still at work, even when we cannot yet see the results.

Key Thought

Patience is trusting God's timing as God develops His purpose.

Questions for Reflection

1. What area of your life currently requires patience?

2. How do you typically respond when God's timing differs from your expectations?

3. What might God be teaching or developing in you during this season of waiting?

4. How can you show patience toward others this week?

Application

This week, when you feel frustrated by delays, pause before responding.

Instead of asking, "Why is this taking so long?"

Ask: “Lord, what are You teaching me as I wait?" - Trust that God is working behind the scenes, even when progress is invisible.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your patience with me. Help me trust Your timing when answers seem delayed, and circumstances change slowly. Teach me to wait with faith rather than frustration and to remain faithful in every season of growth. Strengthen my heart, deepen my trust, and help me remember that You are always working for my good, even when I cannot see it. May the fruit of patience continue to grow in my life as I abide in You.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

Closing Encouragement

The farmer does not dig up the seed daily to check its progress.

He trusts the process.

Today, trust God's process in your life.

What God is growing may take time, but fruit always takes time.
