Leaving a Legacy: Every Man Has Influence
From the Desk of Pastor Owens
Scripture Reading: Psalm 78:4
"We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done."
Devotional Thought
When people hear the words "legacy" or “inheritance,” they often think of money, property, or accomplishments. Yet Scripture teaches us that the greatest legacy/inheritance we can leave is our influence on the next generation.
Father's Day reminds us of the important role fathers play in their children's lives. Yet God's plan for influence extends beyond biological fatherhood. Throughout the Bible, God used fathers, mentors, teachers, spiritual leaders, and ordinary men to guide and encourage those who would follow. Moses invested in Joshua. Paul mentored Timothy. Elijah prepared Elisha. Their impact was not limited to their own families—it reached future generations.
Not every man has had a positive role model. Some grew up without a father, while others experienced broken relationships or difficult family circumstances. The good news is that our past does not limit God. Through Christ, we can become the example we may never have had.
Every man has influence. Whether you are a father, grandfather, uncle, coach, teacher, mentor, pastor, or friend, someone is watching your life. People notice how you handle challenges, treat others, respond to disappointment, and walk with God.
Young men need examples of integrity, faithfulness, humility, and courage. Young women need examples of how godly men demonstrate honor, respect, and kindness. The next generation is seeking authentic men who are willing to follow Christ and help others do the same.
You do not need to be perfect to make a difference. God asks you to be faithful. As you walk with Him, your life can become a testimony that points others to Jesus.
Reflection Questions
Who has positively influenced your life and your faith journey?
Who might God be calling you to encourage, mentor, or invest in?
What kind of example are you setting with your words, actions, and attitudes?
How can you intentionally influence the next generation this week?
Application
Take time this week to encourage a younger person. Share a lesson God has taught you, offer a word of wisdom, or be present and available. Never underestimate how God can use a small investment to create a lasting impact.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the men who have invested in my life and helped shape my faith. Help me recognize the influence you have given me and use it wisely. Grant me the character to model Christ, the courage to invest in others, and the wisdom to encourage the next generation. May my life point others to You and leave a legacy that honors Your name. In Jesus' name, Amen.
