Reflection
Storms have a way of getting our attention. They interrupt our plans, challenge our stability, and often leave us feeling uncertain and overwhelmed. In Matthew 14, the disciples found themselves in the middle of a storm they could not control. The waves were strong, the wind was against them, and fear began to rise.
Yet in the middle of their storm, Jesus came to them.
Peter’s response is both inspiring and instructive. At Jesus' invitation, he stepped out of the boat and began walking on water. For a moment, he did the impossible—not because of his own strength, but because his focus was on Christ. But the moment he shifted his attention to the wind and the waves, fear took over, and he began to sink.
How often does that happen in our own lives?
We start off trusting God, believing His promises, and stepping out in faith. But when challenges arise—unexpected bills, health concerns, relationship struggles—we begin to focus more on the storm than on the Savior.
The lesson is clear: what we focus on determines how we respond.
Jesus did not rebuke Peter for stepping out of the boat—He corrected him for losing focus. And even when Peter began to sink, Jesus immediately reached out and saved him.
This reminds us that even when our faith wavers, God’s presence does not.
Supporting Truth
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you…” — Isaiah 43:2
God never promised a storm-free life, but He did promise His presence in every storm.
Application
Check your focus: Are you looking more at your problems or at Christ?
Choose faith over fear: Fear may come, but it need not lead.
Call on Jesus quickly: Don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed—reach for Him immediately.
Remember who is in control: The storm may be strong, but God is stronger.
Prayer
Lord, in the midst of life’s storms, help me to keep my eyes on You. When fear begins to rise, remind me of Your presence and Your power. Teach me to trust You even when I cannot see clearly. Strengthen my faith so that I can stand firm in every situation. And when I feel like I’m sinking, help me to call on You, knowing that You will always reach out and hold me up.
Amen.
Daily Reminder
“I will not focus on the storm—I will fix my eyes on the Savior.”
